Energy Saving Tips for the Winter

1. Improve Your Insulation

First and foremost, it is a good idea to have your current wall, basement and attic insulation assessed to see if any of it was improperly or inadequately installed of it is old and needs to be replaced. It is possible that air could be escaping your home without you know, thus driving up your bills, and this will only get worse as the temperature outside gets colder. Although improving insulation may cost something upfront, it will ultimately save you time money over the course of the winter months, so it is definitely worth the investment.

Additionally, you will want to check for any small sources of air leakage to make sure that you are covered. This includes window frames, door frames and pipe openings. You can do much of this simply with little costs using a caulking gun from your local hardware store. Also the draft inside your home can be cut by storm windows and downs, so to prevent this plug fabric draft blockers in the cracks beneath the door.

2. Replace Your Furnace Filter Monthly

Another one of many energy saving tips for the winter is to replace your furnace filter monthly. The air filter in your furnace is going to get dirty — that’s what it’s there for.

As the dust and dirt naturally accumulate the air will be unable to pass through the filter, thus forcing the furnace to work that much harder. You can save approximately 5-15% on your energy bill simply by replacing your furnace filter each month.

3. Invest in a Furnace Thermostat Timer

Thermostat timers can help reduce your energy use greatly. These timers will lower temperature in your home when you are not there.

Simply by installing a thermostat timer on your furnace, you can reduce up to 10% of your energy bill this winter.

4. Only Run Your Appliances With Full Loads

Be sure to only wash full loads of dishes and clothes when it comes to washing.

This will not only help to save water, but will also help you save time and energy by not having to run your appliances as often.

5. Lower Your Water Heater to 115 Degrees

You can reduce energy bill by almost 10% if you reduce the temperature of you water heater to 115 degrees.

At this setting, your water heater is saving energy while still heating your water adequately.
