How to Check Your Propane Tank Supply

Checking your propane tank’s supply is quick and easy. Making this a regular habit is ideal to ensure you never run out of propane is ideal.

The following is a step-by-step by process on how to check your propane tank supply:

Locate Your Propane Tank

Large propane tanks can either be above or below ground, at least 10 feet away from the home and any other potential sources of ignition.

While an above ground propane tank will be easy to spot, finding an underground propane tank can be a little more difficult. To locate an underground propane tank, look for the small plastic dome that houses its valves and other components.

Check the Float Gauge

Your propane tank will have an easy-to-read float gauge system. As the name implies, this system utilizes a floating element to determine the level of propane fuel in your tank.

A simple dial will clearly indicate the level of propane fuel in your tank. It shows you the approximate percentage of fuel left.

Know When to Order a Propane Refill

Above ground propane tanks don’t require a propane refile beyond 80% of their capacity. Conversely, underground propane tanks should not exceed 85% of their capacity.

We recommend filling up when the float gauge indicates that your propane tank is around 20-30% of its capacity. However, many will choose to top off sooner than that.

Order Your Propane Refill in Advance

If you have had your propane tank for awhile, there’s a chance the gauge will become less precise. Therefore, make sure to check the gauge a few days in a row to ensure the reading is going down consistently.

These are the basics of how to check your propane tank supply. Make sure you have enough propane for the upcoming colder nights. If you are running low, don’t hesitate to contact us here at Texas Propane with the link below to schedule a delivery!
