Outdoor Propane Grilling Safety Tips

Check for Propane Leaks on Your Gas Grill

Before the season’s first barbecue, make sure to check the gas tank hose for leaks. Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose and then turning on the gas.

If there is a propane leak, the solution will bubble. Other signs of a propane leak include the smell of gas near the barbecue or a flame that won’t light.

Make Sure Your Grill is Stable

Only set up your propane gas grill on a flat surface. Also, make sure the grill can’t be tipped over.

Additionally, consider utilizing a grill pad or splatter mat underneath your grill to protect your deck or patio.

Never Leave a Lit Grill Unattended

Never leave a lit grill unattended, as fires can double in size every minute.

Therefore, make sure to plan ahead so that all of your other food prep chores are complete. This way you can focus on grilling.

Grill Outside in an Open Area Away from the House

Propane gas grills are for outdoor use only. Therefore, make sure to grill outside and at least 10 feet away from your house. This includes carports, garages and porches.

Also, never use propane grills underneath wooden overhangs either, as the fire could flare up into the structure above.

Don’t Store Propane Tanks in an Enclosed Area

Not storing your propane tank properly can present a safety hazard.

First, detach the propane tank from the grill. Then, find a safe place to properly store your propane tank, such as a garage or basement.

Clean Your Propane Gas Grill Regularly

Allowing grease and fat to build up on your propane gas grill provides more fuel to a fire. Grease is a major source of flare ups.

Therefore, remove grease or fat buildup from both your grill and the tray below your grill.
